Tupperware-style parties with a charitable bent
Rising International, a 9-year-old organization helps women in developing countries sell their arts and crafts, become financially independent and lift themselves and their children out of poverty. Female artisans in developing nations make crafts like scarves and baskets and under-employed women sell them at Rising International’s home parties in wealthier countries.
Rising International events work much like typical home-sales parties. Hostesses send out invitations and provide a venue, and reps bring examples of crafts that can be purchased. What’s different, though, is that purchasers hear the stories of the women who created the works being sold.
To date, Rising has raised $1 million and helped women and their families in 45 countries move toward a more sustainable livelihood.
