Street Lamps Could Soon Also Charge Electric Cars
London – Ubitricity, a German company focused on providing clean energy, converted street lamps in Hounslow, London, to have LEDs in them and included a new charging port for electric vehicles to use with a custom-built charging cable.
The charging cable allows an electric car owner to plug into any standard electrical outlet around a city and charge their vehicle. A wireless component in the plug connects to a server held by Ubitricity, notifying them when a user takes power from a point, and charges that person the amount of energy they take. This provides the electric car owner the freedom to use preexisting electrical outlets throughout a city without stealing from the person who pays for the electricity from that outlet. Residents in Hounslow can request from city’s council to have a charging point installed near their home and have a Ubitricity cable ordered to use it
