A Plastic-Free Supermarket Aisle Has Opened In Amsterdam
Netherlands – A supermarket chain in the Netherlands, Ekoplaza, opened its first plastic-free aisle at its Amsterdam location on February 28, 2018. The move points toward the supermarket’s concern with the negative effects plastic is having on the environment and hopes to launch plastic-free isles in all of its locations in the future. The aisle includes more than 700 plastic-free products-packaged in alternatives like cardboard, glass and biomaterials-that don’t cost any more than their plastic-wrapped counterparts.
If successful, it could prove to be a very meaningful first step towards plastic-free grocery shopping, which now accounts to 40% of the world’s plastic waste. It will also provide a testing ground for new compostable packaging biomaterials.
