In Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “Faust”, deeply depressed, Faust, an old philosopher, strikes a deal with the devil. In return for his soul, the devil grants Faust wealth, power and youth. Faust soon falls in love with the beautiful Marguerite. After a brief affair, Marguerite is impregnated and abandoned by Faust. Later, when she is in prison for killing her child, Faust tries to rekindle their love. However, once she realizes that Faust has struck a deal with the devil, she rejects his love and instead rises to heaven with the angels.
